A strict approach towards the sale of tobacco products and smoking in public and educational campaigns form the core of Qatar’s efforts to reduce smoking prevalence. Qatar has modernised and promulgated its tobacco laws in recent years and this reduced smoking prevalence.
During the review period, the results of official government research revealed that almost four-fifths of the entire population of Qatar aged 15 years and older were to some extent tobacco users. However, it should be noted that smoking is heavily weighted towards men, with nearly one-third of men regular smokers, while only 1% of women smoke in some form or the other.
Throughout the review period, Qatar’s government focused more on honouring its commitment to adopt the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and to this end the country has made a coordinated effort to reduce and discourage the consumption of the tobacco products. Under the National Health Strategy 2018-2022 and the national Public Health Strategy 2018-2022, a project was established to reduce tobacco use.
Over a period covering many years, Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has succeeded in organising annual public awareness campaigns in the country to raise awareness of its tobacco control laws. These campaigns aim to inspire residents to follow the tobacco control laws as well as to highlight the penalties for any violations of what are considered to be very important laws.
One of the most important trends developing in Qatar is the decentralisation of the country’s logistics networks as the importance of towns and cities outside of Doha increases. Recent years have seen the government of Qatar actively encourage greater geographic spread in commercial activity by investing substantially in the development of infrastructure across other parts of the country.
