Flexible Packaging in Asia Pacific

July 2024

Flexible packaging accounts for the major share of the unit volumes used in dog and cat food, home care and packaged food. The versatile nature of flexible packaging as well as its cost-effective nature lends it to a wide range of applications across a number of categories. Flexible packaging’s light weight can also help to reduce the environmental footprint of packaging during transportation, although the drive to minimise production of single-use plastic will continue to be seen globally.

Key Findings

Flexible packaging the leading pack type

Flexible packaging accounts for just under half of overall retail packaging unit volumes in Asia Pacific. Within flexible packaging itself, flexible plastic is the dominant pack type, accounting for upwards of 80% of total units. While packaged food accounts for by far the greatest number of flexible packaging units, this type of packaging has a slightly bigger share of sales in both the dog and cat food and home care industries.

Mengniu uses Dow technology on new monomaterial pouch

Dow and Mengniu have teamed up on a new monomaterial yoghurt pouch. The monomaterial design, using the TF-BOPE film made from Dow’s INNATE TF Polyethylene Resins, simplifies recycling, facilitating integration into closed-loop recycling streams. Mengniu is using the technology as it looks to achieve 100% technically recyclable packaging by 2025.

Small sachets maintain their popularity

Small sachets remain popular in the home care and beauty and personal care categories in Asia Pacific, primarily for their affordability among low-income consumers. Small pack sizes will also continue to be in demand among consumers looking for on-the-go snacks. While portion control and single-person households will also be driving demand for single-serve portions.

More growth expected for cat treats

Cat treats and mixers were a dynamic product area in 2018-2023, with further growth expected over the forecast period. Flexible packaging accounts for the bulk of the unit volumes used for these products, with flexible plastic dominating cat treats in Japan, one of the region’s main markets for these products.
