In 2016, labour productivity (or GVA per employee) in the city was USD69,000, 6.3% lower than in other parts of the country, and 27% lower than in London, despite having a high proportion of educated people.
Lower labour productivity, higher unemployment and smaller household size contributed to a 21% gap between average household disposable income in Glasgow and in the remainder of the UK in 2016. The gap is 37% compared to London (USD48,400 versus USD78,400) and the city ranked below Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester as well.
Transport and housing excluded, average consumer expenditure per household in Glasgow (USD27,100) was 25% lower than the average in the rest of UK in 2016. Food and alcoholic beverages accounted for a larger share of total expenditure in 2016 (9.3% versus 8.1% elsewhere in the UK) despite being 7% lower in absolute value. Spending on recreation and culture and hotels and restaurants was 24% lower than in the rest of the UK.
Transport and housing in Glasgow accounted for 43% of total expenditure, versus 39% elsewhere in the UK. Housing is expensive. In 2016, households dedicated 30% of their expenditure for housing, not much below the 31% share in London. This is the highest proportion among large cities globally, except for Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The share of transport costs is comparable with the UK average, at 14% of total expenditure in 2016.
