As a result of the Coronavirus crisis, the Food and Drug Administration extended for four extra months the period to file premarket tobacco applications for new tobacco products.
Manufacturers of tobacco products present in the market on 8 August 2016 were required to submit their applications by 12 May 2020, although the US agency requested an extension due to the effect of the pandemic on their activities. As a result, the new deadline has been extended until 12 September.
Singapore’s Ministry of Health announced in June that all cigarette packets must use standardised packaging with larger graphic health warnings from 1 July. The new regulations apply to all tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigarillos, cigars, bidis, ang hoon and other roll-your-own tobacco products.
Brand and variant names may be displayed, but only using the standard colour and font style. The graphic health warning size will increase from the current 50% to 75%.
Passport Tobacco covers the seven major tobacco categories: Cigarettes, Cigars & Cigarillos, Smoking tobacco (made up of Pipe tobacco and RYO tobacco), Smokeless Tobacco (snuff and chewing tobacco), E-Vapour Products (closed and open); Heated Tobacco; and Tobacco Free Oral Nicotine. Smoking paraphernalia such as pipes, rolling papers, lighters or matches, etc., are not included, nor are nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products, which are part of Euromonitor's Passport Consumer Healthcare database.
