Argentina is going through a situation that it has experienced on other occasions, with a shortage of dollars linked to the government controls as it seeks to avoid devaluing the local currency. Because people cannot buy US dollars at an official price, there is a range of different prices for US dollars via formal and informal channels.
In the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis, several airlines that had left the country have returned, as well as some that had drastically reduced their frequencies returning to their previous frequencies or, in some cases, increasing them. Amongst the airlines that have returned to the country are Qatar Airways and Boliviana de Aviación, and amongst those that have increased their frequencies are Gol Lineas Aereas and Air Europa.
The recovery of the main international chains in all hotel segments is relatively slow due to the fact that they are more dependent on international tourism than their rivals. Since the pandemic, the biggest increase has been in domestic tourism, which tends towards less expensive hotels.
In the post-pandemic environment, many travel intermediaries have turned strongly to internal tourism. On the one hand, domestic tourism has been boosted by the stimulus that the government has given through the PreViaje programme, which has been launched in successive editions and refunds 50% of the expense through a prepaid card.
It is expected that, in the forecast period, domestic tourism will continue to increase due to government plans to stimulate it, as well as the difficulty in accessing US dollars at a reasonable price and the number of taxes that continue to affect all purchases made abroad, in which tourist services are included. This is due to the lack of US dollars in the country and the government's reluctance to respond by generating a devaluation, which is why, on a permanent basis, different types of taxes were added to the official value of the dollar when spending abroad, significantly increasing the cost of access to the foreign currency.
