Overall sauces, dressings and condiments packaging recorded a surge in its unit volume growth in 2020. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers across the country shifted to working and studying remotely, with extensive lockdown periods implemented by the government during the year.
Sauces, dressings and condiments continued to see above-average gains in unit volume terms for plastic-based pack types such as PET bottles, HDPE bottles or plastic pouches in 2021 as consumers were opting for relatively lower-priced flexible “squeezy” packs in large sizes, as they viewed these to be more economical. Plastic packaging formats had already been recording some of the strongest growth rates in 2020, with HDPE bottles, plastic pouches and PET bottles, for example, gaining share in sauces , dressings and condiments in 2020.
Although glass jars remains the most-used pack type in sauces, dressings and condiments packaging, it has been losing share to a number of other pack types, such as stand-up pouches and folding cartons, with the latter often paired with thin wall plastic containers. There have been several new launches in these pack types.
A number of retailers in the UK, including major grocery chains such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Morrisons, Lidl and Aldi, have signed up for the Plastics Pact, a series of pledges to reduce plastic waste, in line with the sustainability trend. Established by WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme), in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, and supported by DEFRA (Department for Food and Rural Affairs), the Plastics Pact is looking to, by 2025, eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use packaging through redesign, innovation, or alternative (reuse) delivery models, with targets to make 100% of plastic packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable, to recycle or compost 70% of plastic packaging and to achieve a 30% average of recycled content across all plastic packaging.
Due to convenience, ease of carrying and increased trialability of smaller pack types, sales of plastic-based flexible packaging types, are expected to see strong growth over the forecast period in sauces, dressings and condiments. This will particularly benefit stand-up pouches – both the more widespread plastic pouches as well as a the currently less widely used aluminium/plastic pouches.
