There was a modest acceleration in the rate of unit volume growth in sauces, dressings and condiments packaging during 2020. With South Africa enforcing one of the strictest lockdowns in the world in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19, many people spent more time at home, which led to the preparation of more home-cooked meals.
Packaging volumes of stand-up pouches used in cooking sauces and pasta sauces rose in 2020, before falling in 2021. With consumers cooking at home more than before in 2020, the demand for easy and convenient solutions rose.
There was strong growth in demand for stand-up pouches in sauces, dressings and condiments over the course of the review period, and the pandemic did not interrupt this trend. This type of packaging is particularly popular in pasta sauces, pickled products and salad dressings, due in large part to its light weight.
Sauces, dressings and condiments packaging as a whole will be recording year-on-year declines over the forecast period as, although the home-cooking trend will remain relatively robust in the short term, the economic impact of the pandemic will be weighing heavily on the purchasing power of many local consumers. Demand for packaging in sauces, dressings and condiments is set to remain subdued over the forecast period as a whole, as South Africa has deep-seated structural issues predating the pandemic that will continue to negatively affect economic growth.
Within mayonnaise, the share of packaging represented by PET bottles is expected to rise steadily over the 2021-2026 period, which will come at the expense of glass jars and PET jars. The growth in frozen potato chips is expected to boost the demand for products such as mayonnaise in the coming years, but glass jars are expected to lose share due to being heavy and prone to breakage and thus not lending themselves as well to e-commerce.
