While unit volume growth in ready meals packaging was much slower in 2021 than it had been a year earlier, it was still positive, as the categories experiencing difficulties in 2020, ie the chilled products and prepared salads, returned to recording positive growth in 2021. When COVID-19 arrived in Canada in 2020, consumers were spending a lot of time in home seclusion, including remote working/learning, with the widespread closure of consumer foodservice outlets also being seen.
Dinner mixes recorded explosive growth in 2020 as Canadian consumers were confined in home seclusion, with many not having access to consumer foodservice outlets or delivery services for much of the year. Dinner mixes had already gained considerable traction in the previous years of the review period in Canada, but the already impressive growth rate was buoyed even further by the increase in home cooking when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country in 2020.
As Canadian consumers have been cooking more at home since the outbreak of COVID-19, owing to lockdowns and other public health measures to slow the spread of the virus, there has been an increasing element of meal-preparation fatigue as well as a rising desire for interesting, new and authentic options. Meal kits in the dinner mixes category therefore continued to perform well in 2021, as they offer quick and simple meal preparation.
Prepared salads are expected to perform well over the forecast period, in line with the growing health and wellness trend in Canada, with the COVID-19 pandemic having increased health consciousness among consumers. This will benefit unit volumes of flexible plastic and, in particular, thin wall plastic containers used in the packaging of prepared salads in 2021-2026.
Over the forecast period, Canada will continue to move towards the goal of implementing a ban on single-use plastic in order to reduce the impact of packaging on the environment. With the country aiming to eliminate plastic waste by 2030, companies will need to innovate in order to meet Canada’s sustainability goals.

This is the aggregation of canned/preserved, chilled pizza, chilled, dinner mixes, dried, frozen pizza, frozen ready meals and prepared salads. Note: Ready meals are products that have had recipe ''skills'' added to them by the manufacturer, resulting in a high degree of readiness, completion and convenience. Ready meals are generally accepted to be complete meals that require few or no extra ingredients, however, in the case of canned/preserved ready meals, the term also encompasses meal ''centres’; for dinner mixes, the term encompasses part meals. Some ready meals may require cooking; others may simply need reheating, prior to serving.
