The positive growth registered in ready meals packaging during 2020 can be attributed mainly to the spike seen in demand for ready meals within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, the requirement for all consumer foodservice outlets to close their doors for dine-in-service during the various quarantine lockdowns that were in place across Switzerland for much of the year motivated consumers to resort to ready meals when looking for a quick and convenient meal solution.
Frozen pizza saw a decline in its unit volumes in 2021 as lockdowns ended and consumers began to increasingly opt for fresh pizza from foodservice outlets once they were spending more time outside their homes. This negatively impacted the packaging unit volumes of flexible plastic and folding cartons used in frozen pizza in 2021.
Although metal food cans still dominate packaging unit volumes in shelf stable ready meals, this pack type was losing share over the review period. The combination of rigid plastic and paper-based containers, in the form of ready meal trays paired with folding cartons, was recording strong unit volume growth throughout the review period, including in 2021, when shelf stable ready meals packaging as a whole slipped back into decline.
Dinner mixes are expected to return to recording rising packaging unit volumes from 2023, with healthy growth rates over the last four years of the forecast period meaning that dinner mixes will record the most dynamic unit volume CAGR in ready meals in 2021-2026. Dinner mixes is an evolving product category in Switzerland, having seen double-digit percentage growth in a number of years in the review period.
Plastic pouches and flexible plastic face challenges during the forecast period due to the general reluctance of many Swiss consumers to use products that are packaged in plastic. This is linked to widespread sustainability concerns over the disposal of packaging waste and the increasingly widespread knowledge that much plastic packaging takes a very long time to biodegrade.

This is the aggregation of canned/preserved, chilled pizza, chilled, dinner mixes, dried, frozen pizza, frozen ready meals and prepared salads. Note: Ready meals are products that have had recipe ''skills'' added to them by the manufacturer, resulting in a high degree of readiness, completion and convenience. Ready meals are generally accepted to be complete meals that require few or no extra ingredients, however, in the case of canned/preserved ready meals, the term also encompasses meal ''centres’; for dinner mixes, the term encompasses part meals. Some ready meals may require cooking; others may simply need reheating, prior to serving.
