Multinational brands should continue to claim the largest share of total footwear current value sales in Taiwan over the forecast period, and in many cases are likely to further consolidate their positions at the expense of domestic rivals. Due to their dominance in sports footwear, multinationals will remain the primary beneficiaries of the growing preference for more casual and comfortable shoes, the popularity of athleisure, streetwear and vintage sneaker styles among younger demographics and rising participation in sports and fitness activities across all age groups.
Shoes combining more comfortable designs with advanced functional benefits in the area of foot health will continue to gain popularity in Taiwan over the forecast period. Together with increasingly busy and physically active lifestyles, population ageing will remain a key driver of demand for footwear with these characteristics.
Sports-inspired footwear looks set to witness a comparatively high level of new product development activity over the forecast period, partly because of the growing tendency of Taiwanese consumers to prioritise comfort when choosing shoes, but also due to the strength of the athleisure and streetwear trends. With these styles gaining popularity beyond younger demographics and increasingly considered appropriate in office environments, more players from this category are likely to join forces with premium and luxury apparel labels to launch co-branded sneakers with elegant and sophisticated designs.
