There is nothing that is likely to change the big picture in Finnish grocery retailing. The long-term trend is towards fewer but bigger outlets, the number of chains is becoming smaller due to consolidation, and success comes through large volumes, smart branding and efficient marketing.
Another factor which is likely to negatively impact small local grocers in the forecast period is that during the first two years of COVID-19, foods and drinks e-commerce developed dynamically in Finland from its previously underdeveloped base, and therefore saw exceptional growth. From 2023 onwards, growth rates in foods and drinks e-commerce are likely to normalise, but there will still be increased demand both from people who became used to this kind of shopping during the pandemic and found it convenient, and those who want to experiment with the channel moving forward.
In the future, small local stores will evolve with into more cooperative spaces, where people come to buy non-grocery products or meet to share a cup of coffee. New shop combinations are emerging, such as flower shops combining with cafés, and restaurant offering clothing stores.

Small local grocers are mostly independent retail outlets (with a selling space of under 400 square metres), kiosks, market stalls or street vendors, owned by families and/or run on an individual basis, and with a primary focus on selling food/beverages/tobacco and other groceries. Small local grocers also includes ethnic grocery stores that specialize in foreign brands and food types, health food stores, confectioners/newsagents/tobacconists (CTNs), food & drink souvenir stores, legally registered mobile shops that are run out of a truck, and regional specialty stores. Retail sales from farmers markets, farms, vineyards, or similar producers are also included in small local grocers. Outlets located within wet markets in Southeast Asia (often located in government-owned multi-story buildings) should be counted as separate outlets.
