Currently there is no mandatory registration for rabbits in Norway, but there is a movement comprised of Animal Protection Norway, The Norwegian Veterinary Association and the Norwegian Animal Care and Assistant Association, which is pushing for a mandatory rabbit registry. It is hard to accurately gauge the pet rabbit population in Norway as close to 80% of sales go through private sellers thus leaving rabbits vulnerable to neglect and excessive breeding.
Other pet food is expected to follow in the footsteps of dog and cat food, with premiumisation, an increased health focus and sustainability all likely to inform new product development. Additionally, we also expect to see more treats like chews appear on the market with some of these products having added benefits to the oral health and hygiene of rodents like rabbits.
While a basic range of small mammal food is readily available in grocery stores and pet shops and superstores, when it comes to bird, fish and reptile food these products are often only sold in pet shops and superstores. For example, grocery retailers mostly only sell wild bird feed and often only have a limited range of pet bird food in their assortment.
