Given the fall in the purchasing power of low- and middle-income families, it does not make much sense for them to purchase huge quantities of products at competitive prices, when in fact these families are already able to purchase the necessary quantities at reasonable prices with their disposable incomes in neighbourhood grocery retailers, instead of travelling to stores which are often far from their homes. The unexpected crisis in Brazilian retail only made this context more visible, and there is much speculation as to whether large cash and carry chains such as Assaí and Atacadão should return to the hypermarkets format, with the display of products on the shelves, instead of stacked boxes/bales of such products.
With the acquisition of BIG group’s hypermarkets by Carrefour Group in June 2022, and the sale of Extra hypermarkets to Assaí group in September of the same year, Carrefour consolidated its position as the absolute leader in hypermarkets, and this is expected to remain the situation in the forecast period. It intends to optimise investments through the opening of new stores or the revitalisation of others.
Hypermarkets is set to see growth in both outlet numbers and current value sales in Brazil in the forecast period. The halt to the decline in the number of stores will be due to the current context of Brazilian food retail, which may need players to reinvent themselves to survive in the coming years.
