The boundaries between convenience stores, supermarkets, and hypermarkets have become increasingly blurred in Taiwan, with this trend expected to accelerate following the acquisitions of RT Mart and Carrefour in the coming years. It is increasingly evident that convenience stores are moving towards a supermarket-style format, and supermarkets are moving towards a more convenience-oriented channel.
Following a series of consolidations in hypermarkets and warehouse clubs, Costco, the American warehouse club, reclaimed full ownership of its Taiwan business by repurchasing 45% shares held by President Group for TWD31 billion in July 2022. Subsequently, PX Mart acquired RT Mart in July 2023 with approval from the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission, while Uni-President acquired Carrefour for TWD29 billion four days later.
The renowned Japanese discount store, Don Don Donki, expanded its footprint in Taiwan by opening its third branch in Kaoshiung in Q4 2023, housed within the Dali department store and spanning 1,000 sqm, making it the largest outlet in Taiwan. Boasting a vibrant ocean marine ambiance, the store features speciality sushi sections, fresh Japanese food imports, and a variety of Japanese cuisine, offering Taiwanese consumers in Kaoshiung an authentic Japanese culinary experience.
