Many Australians are lacking when it comes to consuming sufficient fruit and vegetables, both of which are important as they are high in fibre and help prevent digestive problems, thereby reducing the need for laxatives to ensure regular bowel movements. However, the results of the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ National Health Survey show that 64% of children are getting the recommended amount of fruit (down by nine percentage points in the five years to 2022, from 73%), while only one in 20 children ate the recommended daily serving of vegetables.
In a new study published in January 2024 (co-authored by professors from Deakin and Monash universities in Australia), nearly one in 10 adolescents used non-prescribed, medically unapproved weight loss products around the world. These unapproved weight loss products include laxatives, diet pills, diuretics, and “fitness supplements,” and prior to the study (which involved a meta-analysis of 90 articles comprising 604,552 participants under the age of 18), little was known about how common usage was.
The biggest impact on digestive remedies over the forecast period is anticipated to come from the proposed merger of Chemist Warehouse and Sigma Healthcare, which in turn, will have ramifications across the entire OTC landscape. The industry is currently awaiting the decision from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) as to whether it will approve the deal.
