The number of domestic trips in China is set to return to the pre-pandemic level as early as 2025. Although high-tier cities such as Shanghai and Beijing remain the most visited destinations in China, Chinese travellers are expected to look to explore smaller domestic cities going forward, driven by a value-seeking mindset and demand for experience travel.
China is set to embrace more inbound travel over the forecast period, with the number of trips rising above the pre-pandemic level as the Chinese government is extending unilateral visa-free policies. For example, on 25 June 2024, the China Foreign Ministry announced it will expand its visa-free policy to Australia, New Zealand, and Poland.
