While in value terms domestic travel sales are lower than those of outbound travel and will remain so in the forecast period, in terms of the sheer number of trips domestic travel is by far the most typical way Danes like to travel, in a trend set to persist. Domestic travel grew further during the coronavirus when travel abroad was more challenging.
Both inbound travel to Denmark and outbound travel to Denmark are set to see further growth in the forecast period, largely driven by the same factors that have been propelling growth so far (excluding the disruption caused by COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine): Denmark remains a safe destination, its vicinity to the large German source market is beneficial, and in terms of outbound travel from Denmark, Danes enjoy visiting close-by countries as well as further-flung, typically sunny destinations. Since the late review period, tourism has been the subject of negative news headlines – particularly in the case of outbound travel – for reasons including concern with the impact of overtourism, weather, and nature.
