The New Zealand cruise sector, which only reopened recently, has witnessed a substantial rebound, with 86,300 New Zealanders taking ocean cruises during 2023, according to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Although this figure is lower than the 106,300 New Zealanders who cruised in 2019, it aligns with the global recovery trends in the cruise industry.
The New Zealand tourism industry, although experiencing significant recovery in 2024, is not expected to fully return to pre-COVID levels until 2025 at the earliest. The resurgence in Chinese visitor numbers, while positive, has been slower than anticipated, with air connectivity between New Zealand and China only reaching pre-pandemic levels in early 2024.
