Local consumers’ choices are increasingly driven by lower disposable incomes. This could benefit local players such as Kingsley Beverages and The Beverage Co, along with private label lines brands such as Pick 'n' Pay, offering similar flavour profiles at a reduced cost in non-cola flavourings.
South Africa’s Department of Health has proposed changes to how food should be labelled on store shelves; this regulation will extend to carbonates. The Regulations Relating to the Labelling and Advertising of Foodstuffs proposal require brands to provide full ingredients lists on packaging, and warning labels on items with high salt and sugar content.
Coca-Cola is seeking to differentiate the taste profiles of its regular Sprite and Sprite Zero. As a result of the sugar tax, the sugar content per can has been reduced in Sprite, meaning that the distinct taste profile between the regular and reduced sugar option is no longer as apparent.
