Although Guatemala has extensive natural water resources, the population's access to drinking water still faces significant challenges. According to the United Nations, in 2022 it was estimated that about 3 million inhabitants did not have access to drinking water, representing some 17% of its total population.
Although Guatemalans are showing a growing interest in food and drink products with associated health benefits, there has not yet been a great uptake of bottled functional waters. The company Fábrica de Bebidas Gaseosas Salvavidas SA had launched the Twee functional water brand, containing vitamins, glucosamine and zinc, heralded as the first attempt by a local brand to mass produce such products.
Due to the limited access to drinking water via public distribution systems in Guatemala, a new initiative has arisen to aid the purification of water and support people in low income groups. Ecofiltro Guatemala is an eco-friendly water purification system that is capable of purifying and filtering water from the public network, wells and natural sources.

Bottled Water
This category is the aggregation of still bottled water (spring, mineral & purified), carbonated bottled water (spring, mineral & purified), flavoured bottled water and functional bottled water. Bulk bottled water is split out separately. It is defined as packaged drinking water – purified, spring or mineral – that is packaged in a container of 8 litres or larger. The bulk bottled water data types apply to Still Bottled Water and Carbonated Bottled Water but do not apply to functional or flavoured bottled water. Bulk water is classified according to the new Bulk retail volume and Bulk retail value data type regardless of channel of sale: bulk water sold via retail locations and bulk water delivered direct to a consumer’s home is included. Bulk water sold to institutions (offices, schools etc.) remains excluded.
