E-commerce is set to expand at an impressive pace over the forecast period, with current value growth projected to surpass that for the entire retail market in Ukraine. It will continue to benefit from the fact that changes ensuing from first the pandemic and then the Russian invasion have recently made consumers more likely to regularly shop online and strengthened their appreciation for the convenience, variety and competitive price deals afforded by this method.
Online grocery retailing will remain a focal point for e-commerce investment in Ukraine over the forecast period. Major supermarkets, hypermarkets and convenience stores chains are expected to establish more dark stores and automated fulfilment centres to support the launch and expansion of ultra-fast delivery services in Kyiv and other cities, whether independently or in partnership with specialist third party platforms like Zakaz.
The pursuit of omnichannel strategies in the Ukrainian retail market over the forecast period will mainly comprise sustained efforts by store-based businesses to enhance their digital sales capabilities. Traffic in the other direction also looks set to increase, however, in that operators primarily focused on e-commerce will continue to develop physical stores or expand their existing networks to better meet the needs of consumers.
