Global cocoa prices are at an all-time high, which has been impacting sales of major snacks categories such as chocolate confectionery. The prices of cocoa in India have more than doubled in the last couple of years.
While small local grocers remains the largest distribution channel for sales of chocolate confectionery, retail e-commerce is quicky gaining prominence. From close to a 1% share in 2019, retail e-commerce has grown significantly, and is set to account for close to a 9% share as of 2024.
In India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) approved a proposal for new regulation of the nutritional labelling on packaged foods in mid-2024. These changes, once implemented post-review, will require manufacturers to prominently display the total content of salt, sugar, and saturated fat in bold and in a larger font on the packaging in the coming years.
