Yoghurt in Bulgaria will see stagnating growth in volume and current value terms due in part to category maturity and the expected reduction in retail prices of the most extensive plain yoghurt category. Inflation will decrease, and production costs and retailers’ overheads are likely to stabilise and decline, too, particularly at the beginning of the forecast period.
Although a very mature subcategory, plain yoghurt will, however, return to growth from the middle of the forecast period onwards, mainly due to its health benefits as a natural supplier of probiotics. It will also remain one of the main foods for older Bulgarians as it is relatively cheap, provides vital nutrients and supports stomach and gut health.
However, the most significant positive development, although on a much smaller scale, is expected to be seen in flavoured yoghurt and drinking yoghurt, thanks to the fact that local consumers increasingly prefer naturally healthy and lighter desserts and drinks. Furthermore, these two subcategories enjoy the most innovation.
